Project 01 Construction Industry Info Panel

The first ICI project.

 According to the brief, this project will introduce the scope of work handled by professionals and sub-professionals in their respective professions both in the public and the private sectors in Malaysia.

It will enable us, students to develop an understanding of the building team, its organization, their duties, responsibilities and the inter-relationship within which they will seek employment, career progression or further study; learn about the general overview of construction industry from mankind perspective derived from different point of views; understanding the general construction process from the sketch plan to completion of a building and introduce the scope of work handled by the players involved and will help us to develop graphic skills in summarizing the information such as (but not limited to) definition, construction process, team players, classification, stages in construction etc.

We need to carry out an in depth study and obtain information/ references through books and the Internet in a group about construction industry. We must then incorporate extra information as elaboration or further explanation about Construction Industry. We must also consider the arrangement of the info panel ( incorporate images, etc) and present them on (min) 2/ (max) 3 A2 mounting boards. Everything should be hand drawn or in a collage style.

Reflection

We did a lot of research and investigated on what is construction industry all about. Everyone were assigned with a subtopic to be investigated on by our group leader in order to safe more time. We brainstormed about how we want our info be arranged in a creative and interesting way. I realized that team work and time management are very important when completing a group project. Communicating between each other is also important. I'd obtained and improved my knowledge on Construction Industry after completing this project.

Project 02 Building Team 
The aim of this assignments is to enable us to develop an understanding of the building team, its organization, their duties, responsibilities and the inter-relationship. It also act as a way for us to develop awareness of their professional responsibilities and appreciate their profession in the construction industry. There are two parts for this assignment: Group work ( Anna Neo, Me, Jefri Neo, Simpson Chin and Darren Sia ), where we need to interview a person (s) who holds a certain position in the construction industry, note down all of the information obtained and film the whole interview process/ the environment of the workplace, etc into a short video presentation;  The individual component, where everyone need to produce a magazine booklet (6/7 pages) using the information gathered during the interview and additional information ( research ) which shows understanding about the chosen element. 
Our group chose Interior Architect at first but as quite a number of groups chose the same topic, we have no choice but to accept our lecturer's choice -- M&E Engineer.

Reflection Although we didn't get what we wanted , interviewing an M&E engineer was still exciting and quite a surprise actually. I improved my knowledge a lot on what is a M&E engineer, understands what their job-scope is, their responsibilities, how important the role of an M&E egineer is, etc. Besides that, it also make me realize the importance of communicating with each other ( whether clients or workers ) through different ways, team work, time management and much more. Throughout this project, I've learned to communicate in a different setting, a more professional setting where there must be intense eye contact, appropriate use of words, body language, etc. I'd also improved my Photoshop skills while producing the magazine.

Project 03  The Project Brief

We were asked to group ourselves into a group of 2 ( Bryan Teh QD & Me ) and find a specific land within the campus to initiate a small construction project. The size of the land could not exceed 30m x 30m. 
We were required to propose one project that serves one of the following purposes and produce a report using Microsoft Word ( min 10 pages, max 15 pages). 
1. Recreation area 
2. Study Enhancement Area  
3. Rest area  
4. Food and beverage (dining area)  
5. Commercial area (exclude food and beverage)  

We were assigned with option 4, Food & Beverage ( Dining Area ).  We choose to propose a glass house cafe which provides coffee, cakes and pastry, sandwiches and a variety of spaghetti and snacks. We also considered about the view customers can enjoy, therefore the glass house is the perfect choice. Besides that, we need to study about the types of building development (includes suggestion, rationale, benefits, site analysis, evaluation  and the needs of the project to the client and to the community ) and the authorities role in construction industry ( focus on Building Plan Approval Process and  Procedures ) and include the findings into the report for this project.

Reflection

From this project, I've learned to document the investigation and observation about a site, what to consider before starting a project, how to analyse the site, etc. I'm also able to propose a new project confidently, communicate the findings in a systematic and convincing presentation/ report, discuss matters of design and construction structures and explain plus illustrate the structures of organisations involved in the construction industry from the design stage to final account stage. In addition, I need to work together with my partner and distribute the workload equally among ourselves, arrange our timetables ( time management ) so we're able to meet up to discuss and brainstorm about what structure we wanna build ( materials, possibilities, connectivity, etc ) and why.
